4G System Lab™ is an advanced planning and analysis tool for LTE and mobile WiMAX. It can be used at all stages of the LTE or mobile WiMAX radio access network analysis, from coverage and capacity prediction, through validation of the influence of chosen radio resource management (RRM) features up to technology business casing. As such, 4G System Lab™ is addressed to a vast spectrum of end users, including universities, research institutions, telecom equipment vendors, system integrators, consultancies, regulators and finally cellular operators. 4G System Lab™ can be licensed as a stand-alone or webbased application.
4G System Lab™ belongs to the category of system-level simulators truly reflecting the behavior of a modeled radio access network. A tool user selects and configures the radio interface (either LTE or mobile WiMAX), chooses appropriate channel and traffic models, defines the network to be analyzed, makes the choice on the set of RRM functionalities and runs the simulation. The tool is time-driven and models, with high accuracy, all the events that happen within a radio network. This includes terminals mobility, cell selection / reselections, attach, random access, admission control, handovers, power control, scheduling and many more. Special attention is given to co-channel interference (CCI) control, where functionalities managing CCI can be easily modeled and verified. After simulation, user-defined network statistics collected over defined observation time window, are available as reports for post processing.
The role played by RRM features in LTE, LTE-Advanced and mobile WiMAX will be far greater than in previous wireless systems. Therefore we decided to put special emphasis on appropriate modeling of RRM features. This constitutes the cornerstone of 4G System Lab™ and differentiates it significantly from the classical RNP tools. We provide plenty of representative algorithms for RRM and CCI control. For those users who want to verify their own features – we provide an open API so that they can easily implement their own solution. The same holds for channel and traffic models, which can also be user-defined. The tool has a modular structure and can be easily expandable. In addition to an in-depth technical evaluation including coverage and capacity estimation, traffic analysis, verification of various RRM schemes and CCI control mechanisms, we provide rich business analysis environment. This allows for network dimensioning, estimation of the costs of introduction of a certain technology or set of features, their prospective revenues, BEP and ROI estimations and finally for vendor short-listing, which can be particularly interested for mobile operators. 4G System Lab™ complements the other IS-Wireless products such as LTE PHY Lab™ and WiMAX PHY Lab™. It is a continuously evolving product. In the near future it will include features belonging to 3GPP Rel 9 and more importantly to Rel 10 – also known as LTE-Advanced.
