IS-Wireless works on a new communication standard for railways – FRMCS

IS-Wireless has signed a letter of intent to collaborate on creating an FRMCS testbed in Poland. The agreement involves PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., Pomorska Kolej Metropolitalna S.A., the Warsaw University of Technology – Faculty of Transport, and IS- Wireless.

The railway industry requires modern communication systems based on 5G and, in the future, 6G. FRMCS, a new communication standard, will be deployed across Europe in the coming years. In Poland, its implementation will be preceded by the construction of an FRMCS testbed. This two-year project will enable the testing of new technology that is crucial for the future of safe and efficient railway operations. IS-Wireless will be responsible for developing the architecture, quality requirements, and security for the 6G-Ready FRMCS network system.

FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) is a new communication standard currently based on 5G and, in the future, 6G, which will replace the existing GSM-R system. The first commercial deployments of FRMCS are expected to start in 2028. The agreement was signed during the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin.
